Global Themes/Tips, pitfalls to avoid, general overview of the year

Josh:  Don’t take on the responsibility of ensuring that duty hours aren’t violated.  When people ask refer back to the email regarding duty hours.  Don’t fix it for them.

Friend and colleague first.  Remain engaged for the whole year.  Balancing 3rd year duties and added chief duties.

Keep your eyes and ears open to recognize struggling co-residents

Keep the program leadership up-to-date on how we are doing administratively.  How can you help improve the program?  Be available for constructive criticism.

Know that you will be The Person that folks will be going to with issues (coming from nurses, residents, staff, etc.)

Mid-year dip / Spring Fever:  anxiety of those not feeling that they are ready to Move Up

Interns transitioning to 2nd yrs

Resident/Fac & Class Meeting:  gather ideas to bring to the meetings

For those coming with complaints see if you can get them to come up with solutions.  If they want something done try and get them to come with plans for change.

Listen first –

Keep your class engaged.  Get your co-residents involved in making change/improvements.

Be careful about your email responses.  Think about how it may be received.

Set the tone for a positive great year – inspire the residents to rise up and do a great job collectively.
